What the spring actually does
The opener does not lift your garage door. The springs do. A half horsepower motor would never move a 200 pound door on its own. It guides a door the springs have already made close to weightless. That is why a snapped spring turns an easy door into a dead one, and why running the opener afterwards strips gears or bends the top section.
Torsion springs sit on a steel shaft above the opening and unwind as the door comes down. Extension springs run along the horizontal tracks on either side and stretch as the door goes up. Homes built across Collin County in the last twenty five years are almost all torsion. Older single width doors in East Plano and Richardson often still carry extension springs, which need a safety cable through the middle of each one so a break cannot throw steel across the garage.
What we check before giving you a number
The measurement decides everything. Wire diameter, inside diameter and overall wound length have to match, and guessing any of the three gives you a door that either floats upward or drops like a stone. On a double door where the original spec is unclear, we weigh it. Insulated sandwich doors and doors with glass inserts are heavier than the builder grade steel they replaced, and a spring sized for the old door will never balance the new one.
We also look at what the break did on the way out. A spring that let go under load usually took the cables with it, knocked a drum out of position or pulled a bearing plate out of line. Fitting a fresh spring onto frayed cables just buys a second call in six months.
Both springs, one bill or two
A double door on a two spring setup carries two springs of identical age and identical mileage. When one goes, the other is usually close behind. We measure both and tell you what the second one looks like. If it has real life left, we say so and you pay for one. Replacing the pair together costs less than two visits and keeps the shaft loaded evenly across its length.
Cycle ratings and Texas heat
A standard spring is rated at roughly 10,000 cycles, where one cycle is up and back down again. A household coming and going five times a day burns through that in five or six years. High cycle springs rated at 25,000 come in the same sizes, cost more up front and usually outlast two standard sets. On a three car garage where one door does most of the work, upgrading that single door alone is often the smart spend.
Attached garages here run from near freezing in January to well past 120 degrees on a July afternoon. Steel cycling across that range every year tires sooner than the rating suggests. Galvanized springs hold up better where a garage stays damp.
This one is not a homeowner repair
A wound torsion spring holds serious stored energy and it does not let go politely. Winding bars slip out of the cone, set screws strip under load, and the bar comes around faster than anyone can move. Never loosen a set screw. Never try to unwind or adjust spring tension. Never put a screwdriver in a winding cone. Keep the door down, park outside and let a tech with proper winding bars do it.

New springs go on with the cables reset evenly on both drums. Tension is set so the door holds still at waist height with the opener disconnected.

We reset the opener force settings to the new balance, test auto-reverse against a solid object on the floor and run the 25 point check before packing up.
