What off-track really means
Your door hangs on ten to twelve rollers riding inside a steel channel, and two lift cables running from the bottom brackets up to drums on the torsion shaft. The whole system stays square because both sides move exactly together. Lose one roller, let one cable slip its groove, and the door goes out of square within a few inches of travel. From there it binds, the opener pushes harder, and the damage compounds fast.
That is why the first instruction is always the same. Stop running the opener. Every extra cycle on a door that is already off drags a roller stem through a stile, kinks another section of track or shears a hinge.
What we look at on arrival
The tech clamps the door before anything else, then works backwards from the symptom. Rollers get checked for seized bearings and flat spots. Drums get checked for a slipped set screw, which is a quiet and common culprit. Cables come off and get inspected along their full length, including the loop at the bottom bracket where corrosion hides. Track gets sighted down for kinks and checked against the jamb for plumb.
Then the springs get tested, because a door that came off after a bang has a spring problem underneath the track problem, and fixing one without the other sends us back in a fortnight.
Cables, drums and the part under tension
Lift cables are the quiet workhorse of a garage door. They are galvanized aircraft cable, sized to the door weight, and they fail slowly at the bottom loop where water collects and at the drum where they flex. Fraying is visible if you know where to look, which is one of the things a yearly check catches.
The bottom bracket is where the cable anchors, and it sits under full spring tension whenever the door is down. It is not a bracket to unbolt. Anyone who has taken one off a loaded door remembers it. This is a job for someone with the door properly clamped and the springs safely unloaded.
Local conditions that put doors on the ground
Two and three car garages are the default across Collin County, which means most households run two doors and reverse in and out of a tight opening several times a day. Backing into the door while it is still traveling upward is the single most common cause we see, and it usually lands on the bottom two sections.
Older stock in East Plano and Richardson carries a different problem. Doors from the 1980s often still ride on the original steel rollers with no bearings, and thirty years of Texas heat and grit leaves them square instead of round. Those doors jump the track from ordinary use. Swapping to nylon rollers on sealed bearings fixes the noise and the derailing at the same time.
