Hail Dented Garage Door: Repair, Replace or Claim?
A shallow dent in the flat face of a steel section is usually cosmetic and the door keeps working. A dent that creases a rib, bends an end stile or pushes a hinge out of line has changed the section, and that one gets replaced. Most Texas homeowners policies with wind and hail coverage treat the garage door as part of the dwelling, though the outcome depends on your policy and your deductible.
North Texas takes hail every spring, and the garage door is the biggest flat vertical target on the front of the house. NOAA keeps the record of every reported hail event by county in its Storm Events Database, and Collin County shows up in it year after year. After a storm the question is always the same: does this door need anything doing to it at all?
Is the dent cosmetic or structural?
Most hail damage on a steel door is cosmetic. A garage door skin is thin, commonly 25 to 27 gauge steel, and a hailstone will dimple it without affecting how the door runs. A dimpled door that opens smoothly, holds its balance and seals at the floor is a paint and pride problem.
Work through this before you call anyone.

The ribs are the thing to look at. A garage door section gets its strength from the pressed ribs and the end stiles at each edge. Dent the flat field between ribs and you have changed the look. Crease a rib or bend a stile and you have changed how the section carries load, which shows up later as a door that racks in the track or a hinge that keeps working loose.
Can hail dents be pulled out?
Rarely on a garage door, and this is where a lot of homeowners get sold something that does not work.
Paintless dent repair works on car panels because the metal is thicker, curved, accessible from behind and finished with flexible automotive paint. A garage door section is thin, mostly flat, backed by insulation on any modern door, and finished with a baked enamel that cracks when the steel is worked. Pushing a dent out of a foam filled section usually leaves a visible ripple and a damaged coating.
The workable options are to live with it or to replace the affected sections.
What does section replacement cost?
Replacing one or two sections is worth pricing against a whole new door, because the answer is not always obvious.

Two practical limits decide this for you.
Availability. Sections are model specific. If your door is a current model in a current color, a matching section is an order away. If the door is fifteen years old and the line was discontinued, there may be nothing that fits, and the answer becomes a new door.
Color match. Even when the exact section exists, a new one will not match a door that has faced fifteen Texas summers. Baked enamel fades and chalks. A new white section beside a weathered white section reads as a new section. We tell you honestly what the match will look like before you order, and on a badly faded door most people end up replacing the whole thing.
Once you pass three or four damaged sections on a standard seven panel door, a new door is usually the better value and it comes with a full warranty.
How does a hail claim usually treat a garage door?
Here is the honest version, with no promises about your particular claim.
A garage door is normally part of the dwelling under a Texas homeowners policy, so if you carry wind and hail coverage, hail damage to the door falls under the same coverage as your roof. The Texas Department of Insurance publishes plain language guidance on filing a hail claim and a full home insurance guide, and both are worth reading before you call your carrier.
What tends to drive the outcome:
- Your deductible. Many Texas policies carry a separate wind and hail deductible set as a percentage of the dwelling amount. On a large house that number can exceed the cost of a couple of sections, which makes a door-only claim pointless.
- Actual cash value against replacement cost. An ACV settlement subtracts depreciation for the age of the door. A replacement cost policy pays the depreciation back once the work is done and you send the invoice.
- Whether the roof went in the same storm. Most garage door claims ride along with a roof claim, and the adjuster is already on site.
- Matching. Whether a carrier pays to replace a whole door to match sections that cannot be matched varies by policy and by adjuster. Ask directly rather than assuming.
Practical steps that help, straight from the TDI guidance: file promptly, photograph the damage from several angles and in good light before anything is repaired, keep a list of who you speak with, and be present when the adjuster inspects so nothing gets missed. Save every receipt for temporary repairs.
